Pa will forever be my father
I miss the times when…
Sit out on our balcony with Pa
On those warm and breezy nights
I also loved it when he spoke French
I remember the days…
Ma and Pa enjoy taking us to a noodle shop
When I would add spices to my noodles
Pa looks on approvingly
You also told me…
I am blessed with a gifted imagination
Those were the good days…
On One day
One day I was playing hopscotch…
And they took us away from Phnom Penh
And then took you away

Beauty Cannot be Seen
I don’t see anything
It’s too dark
Not even the streetlamps
Can provide the light I need
Nobody can see,
But I smile anyways.
Flowers fall to the ground
Petals litter the cement floor
Everyone is quiet, breathing softly
I hold my breath
It is too beautiful
For me to look for long.
Look up, a voice whispers.
Nobody has spoken,
But I do, I look up,
Eyes full of wonder,
Heart full of hope,
And I hold my breath.
I look up and I can hear
The chirping of crickets
Calling out to each other,
The wind blows gently,
Swaying the trees
From side to side
He moves gracefully,
The wind does,
He touches not the trees
Or the leaves either,
And so they managed to stay afloat
Tonight
I will not say good-bye
Never again
I do not know whether to cry or run
He is real
And he is beautiful.
We are the lucky ones,
He croons
And I feel a mild breath of air
Tickle my cheek
Before surrounding me
Like a pod protecting its peas,
And we are together again.
I don’t see anything
But it is beautiful
I am filled with so much happiness
My heart soars,
Flutters,
Leaps,
I don’t see anything.

The once happy girl
I, Luong was a girl
With a generous heart
And a happy face
Sisters celebrate in the New Year’s parade
With a delicacy to laugh when the fireworks boom
We as sisters are a happy bunch
Cause the things that are put before us are an expensive sum
With an ecstatic grin, Geak giggles
And the next Chou claps
A time we celebrate
Is a time I know
This is what I remember
And what I’ll treasure
But that was the past
And now I am a beast

Pa, I love You
Pa is loved for
His generous heart
Unlike most fathers
Who are careless
Pa rewards us by
Taking us swimming at the club
Everyday I would
Feel proud of myself
Because he is very soft-spoken,
Gentle, and giving
The sky is lovely
And extraordinarily bright
I love listening to Pa speak French
To his colleagues
And that’s why I like learning the language
I love being inspired
By his graceful words
And that’s why I appreciate his love

Home
At night, I like to sit out on our balcony with Pa,
And watch the world below us pass by.
It is a warm a breezy night -
The kind that requires no blankets.
Khuoy says something,
That makes us all laugh loudly,
As we scold him for saying such a thing.
My eyes settle on Geak.
She is beautiful and everything she does is adorable.
Turning away, and looking up to Pa, I smile at him,
And he smiles back too,
Telling me that it will all be okay.
Things became unclear, and everything became distant,
Then it all started to slowly fade away.
All of a sudden, I looked up,
And saw these beautiful puffy white clouds
That were moving towards me.
But instead of seeing the my restless beloved Phnom Penh,
I see the open fields that was to be,
My new home.
